Despite being entirely hand sewn this DIY felt laptop sleeve comes together quickly and is sure to brighten the cloudy days ahead.
DIY 14″ Laptop sleeve
You will need:
1 yard base color (I used Grey Flannel*)
1/4 yard accent color (I used Banana Creme Pie*)
*Matching thread
Grey cross stitching thread
Velcro to match Contrast: I used Butter
Leather punch (available in craft, tack and hobby stores)
I realize my laptop is a weird size but you can easily size up or down as needed.
Cut the yardage down to 15″ x 32″
(or 16″ x 33″ for larger laptops)
Using the left over grey felt cut a 15″ long scalloped strip. (template A at the end of post)
Punch holes in the center of the scallops with a leather punch. (You can also use a heavy-duty hole punch if you use a wool or wool blend felt.
Repeat with 2 strips of yellow felt. Set aside.
Cut scraps of yellow into:
6 – 1″ x .05″ (B)
1 – 2″ x .05″ (C)
1 – 10″ x .05″ (D)
(on template)
Create bow using the 10″ and 2″ pieces as shown.
Because I neglected to take photos of the piece before I folded it over on itself I have created this handy albeit terrible artists rendering of the process.
Cut triangles out of Velcro sides to create points and set aside.
Lay out the rectangle and now shape and stitch into place using an applique stitch or running stitch and matching thread. On the opposite side stitch the hook (scratchy side of the Velcro) down with embroidery thread for added strength.
Lay out the scallop shapes in alternating colors and stitch down along the flat edge and ends if desired.
Position soft Velcro side (loop) and sew down.
Fold along center and stitch top scallops together with an overcast stitch.
Overcast stitch the bottom closed the same way.
Fold along center of felt case.
Using embroidery thread over cast stitch up the sides, stopping at flap.
Cut out felt heart shape (I) from white, chartreuse, and sparrow colored felts.
Cut (C) from white felt.
Cut one each of templates E, F, and G from and 1 D from red felt.
Trace out the heart shape onto template B try to leave lots of spacing around the heart it will be easier to sew the vinyl down.
Cover heart shape with buttons – This doesn’t need to be exact.
Sew vinyl over button pieces.
Throw a few loose buttons in if desired.
Set Aside.
Stitch template C onto template A
Stitch down red D piece using an overcast stitch and matching thread. Trim ends of felt so they fit at an angle.
Make a Felt Bow
Loop E piece over as shown and stitch down. Wrap F piece around the loop and stitch down. Lay onto G piece and secure with a few stitches.
Place the ribbon in the center and stitch down.
Place vinyl covered B piece behind the box front. Carefully stitch together using matching thread and hiding the stitches under the loose scalloped heart edge. Set aside.
Lay out heart shapes (I ) as shown and stitch each down with a running stitch and matching thread.
Sew sides together (D and H) Attach back piece to frame with an overcast stitch with matching thread.
Sew front on, stuffing before you close.
Print templates as full page.
